The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) promotes quality patient health by providing patient services leadership and supervision of all aspects of patient care and quality improvement. Oversees administra! tive duties such as hiring, departmental orientation, budgeting, staffing, policy and program development. Manages, reviews, assesses, and assists with patient services processes and procedures. Sets departmental objectives, establishes standards of nursing practice, and coordinates with other departments to provide effective staff leadership and maximum service to patients.
Essential functions include:
Communication and relationship building: Effective communication, relationship management, influence of behaviors, ability to work with diversity, shared decision-making, community involvement, medical staff relationships, academic relationships.
Knowledge of the health care environment: Clinical practice knowledge, patient care delivery models and work design knowledge, health care economics knowledge, health care policy knowledge, understanding of governance, understanding of evidence based practice, outcome measurement, knowledge of a! nd dedication to patient safety, understanding of utilization/! case management, knowledge of quality improvement and metrics, knowledge of risk management, knowledge of service excellence, knowledge of value-based purchasing.
Leadership Skills: Foundational thinking skills, personal journey disciplines, the ability to use systems thinking, succession planning, change management.
Professionalism: Personal and professional accountability, career planning, ethics, evidence-based clinical and management practice, advocacy for the clinical enterprise and for nursing practice, active membership in a professional organization.
Business Skills: Understanding of health care financing, human resource management and development, strategic management, marketing, information management and technology.
Successful candidate must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing. B.S.N. is required. Master's degree preferred. Recent clinical experience required, including 3 years of management experience and 3 years! of clinical acute care experience (6 years total).
