CEHE operates non-profit Colleges doing business as Stevens-Henager College in Utah and Idaho (including Independence University);! CollegeAmerica in Colorado, Arizona, and Wyoming; and California College San Diego. CEHE is accredited by a national accrediting commission recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. A TUTOR is anyone who is of a similar status as the person being tutored. Because tutoring is usually considered less threatening and intimidating, there are many benefits for both the tutor and tutee in this relationship, such as establishing a rapport with the tutee in a way that an instructor cannot. Because the tutor is seen by the tutee as being more at his/her own level, advice given by the tutor may be accepted more readily than advice from the instructor/professor.

Essential Functions

  • Be positive and support students in helping the Instructor/professor in carrying out their ! lesson plans
  • Familiarize yourself with different teac! hing techniques and learning styles, so that you may appropriately choose methods right for your student
  • Familiarize yourself with your student's learning materials, and if necessary, work with the instructor
  • Be prepared. Come with what you need: pens, pencils, paper, dictionary, thesaurus, grammar handbook, etc.
  • Be familiar with the source texts they are reading
  • Update the professors/instructors of assigned students on a regular basis to discuss the progress of these students and to request guidance on how to help them better
  • Keep accurate records of all hours spent tutoring
  • Keep accurate records of the student’s pre and post evaluations
  • Keep accurate records of students you have tutored and who did not show up for their tutoring sessions
  • Keep accurate records of students you have called and the discussions you have had with them in relation to their class work
  • If you are privy to confidenti! al information with regard to the person with whom you are tutoring, (i.e., organizational files, diagnostics, personal stories, etc.), you must treat it as privileged information and follow all codes and standards of ethics that apply
  • Be respectful of the effort and trust these students are putting in you. It is never easy to show writing work to anyone; you need to be encouraging and generous in your praise. Then you can be constructive in your criticism
  • Work at their level and with an agenda that serves their needs, not yours
  • Offer your help; don't always wait for the student to come to you
  • Make the student experience your priority. Give the individual student with whom you are working your full attention
  • Stay in contact with your student and instructor/professor so you are always on the same page with regard to assignments, etc
  • Communication skills: Interaction with online tutoring lacks face to face connectivity. An! online tutor needs to have excellent communication skills to hold a me! aningful and interesting conversation. His/her job is to guide the student in a friendly as well as assertive manner.
  • Computer skills: The tutor must know how to operate and use a computer to handle application tools, to give quick responses, and to utilize whiteboards to steer through the long distance learning
