GENERA! L SUMMARY
Performs professional investigative services for the Public Defender's Office; performs related duties as required. The position is located in the Ada County Public Defender's Office.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Conducts comprehensive reviews of police investigations, identifying problems and deficiencies;
Coordinates and/or conducts additional investigative activities filling any gaps identified in the case;
Examines crime scenes and physical evidence in order to gain information for the defense;
Takes photographs as appropriate;
Interviews witnesses, professionals, police officers and clients, and documents each relevant interview;
Uses a working knowledge of criminal identities to identify possible suspect(s), and additional appropriate evidence;
Researches the background of appropriate persons;
Testifies in court regarding actions undertaken and results; and
Serves as a ! liaison with the Prosecuting Attorney's Office and local, stat! e and federal law enforcement agencies.
May serve as a lead worker over other investigators or interns; and
Performs related duties as required.
GENERAL INFORMATION
This position involves a variety of work ranging from routine and special investigatory activities to the development and utilization of tactical street intelligence for the purpose of providing information to the defense in felony and misdemeanor cases. The Incumbent works with Public Defenders and is granted considerable latitude with only minimal supervision. Completed work is reviewed from an overall standpoint in terms of feasibility, compatibility with other work, and effectiveness in meeting expected results.
JOB REQUIRMENTS
Graduation from an accredited college or university and any combination of education, training and/or experience, which demonstrates competence in each of the following;
Considerable knowledge of the principles, procedures! and practices of criminal investigation;
Considerable knowledge of pertinent federal, state and local laws;
Good knowledge of the Criminal Justice System;
Good knowledge of photographic techniques and interpretation;
Good knowledge of possible sources of information on property and/or persons involved in specific crimes;
Good knowledge of community and other resources available to help find current location of
individuals;
Good knowledge of investigative techniques;
Skill in developing trust confidence, and cooperation of persons;
Skill in basic photography;
Ability to analyze difficult investigatory problems, adopt effective courses of action and draw appropriate conclusions;
Ability to prepare clear, concise and comprehensive written reports;
Ability to communicate with and relate to a wide variety of professionals, police officers, witnesses, criminals, persons wh! o are indigent or illiterate and other clients of the Public Defender; !
Ability to deal tactfully and firmly with others;
Ability to conduct productive interviews;
Ability to document a case and present it to the Public Defender's Office;
Ability to give clear and convincing testimony in court;
Ability to work effectively with situations that may be highly emotional in nature.
The incumbent will furnish their own transportation throughout the county;
This position has been designated safety sensitive and therefore the incumbent is subject to random drug testing.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL CONDITIONS
The Investigator will conduct interviews in private homes and public places such as offices, hospitals, nursing homes, and jails etc.;
Will be required to attend meetings, interview persons and otherwise conduct the normal business of the Public Defender's office outside normal business hours. Frequently works long and late hours in contacting witnesses and ! in trial preparation.
